Unit 9

In Unit 9, there will be no new phonics sounds learned. This unit focuses on closed syllables. The words we will be working with will all only have one syllable which will all be a closed syllable.

To know if a syllable is closed it must have:
   1. only one vowel
   2. the vowel must be a short vowel
   3. only consonants after the vowel

How to mark up a closed syllable word:
   1. underline the entire word and write a "c" for 'closed' underneath
   2. draw a breve (we just say a smile) above the vowel to show it is a short vowel

To know if a syllable is vowel-consonant-e it must have:
   1. the vowel-consonant-e (v-e) combination
   2. the e is silent
   3. the first vowel has a long sound

   1. underline the entire word and write "v-e" underneath for 'vowel-consonant
   2. draw a macron (we just say a line) above the first vowel to show it is a long vowel
