Dear New Fifth Grade Student,             August  2019

Hello!  My name is Mrs. Lycosky and I will be your fifth grade teacher.  I hope you are as excited as I am about this wonderful time of year.  August is the month that ends summer, but it is also the time when we begin to think about a new school year with a fresh start.  I am sure we will have a positive and productive year.

It has been a wonderful summer filled with many adventures with my family.  My husband and I took our 11 year old daughter, Samantha, and 8 year old son, Nathan, on two separate vacations. First we spent several days exploring New York City.  We visited the Bronx Zoo, climbed the stairs to the top of the Statue of Liberty, and saw the Broadway show, Wicked. Corolla, NC was another destination of ours this summer.  Our family loves the beach- splashing in the waves, building sand castles, searching for seashells, and quality family time. The beach is my happy place! The rest of the summer was filled with day trips to the Philadelphia Zoo, the local library, and the YMCA.  Both of my kids played travel softball / baseball so there were many hours at the ball field. It has been fantastic to be home with my family, but I am ready to get back in the classroom and am greatly looking forward to an exciting school year with you and your fellow classmates.

This year is an exciting year for students.  We’ll be studying many interesting topics, from the ocean to the Revolution, reading many novels, and doing experiments.  My classroom is fun and exciting, where you will learn a lot. Fifth grade is also the year where you will be expected to be responsible and work very hard.  The best part of my job is helping you become the very best you can be.

Organization will be very important this year.  Below is the suggested supply list for fifth grade.  If possible, please have your materials at the start of the school year.  If you think you will need other materials, just ask.

Your first assignment for the school year is to collect pictures that represent you and your interests.  Think about all the things that are important to you. You can cut out pictures from magazines or bring in photos.  Anything works as long as it tells us something about YOU! Just make sure to check with your parents before you take any photos from your albums.  Only bring in items approved by your parents. We will be using the pictures to decorate our writing journals, so keep that in mind when considering the size of the pictures.  You don’t have to do anything with the pictures yet. Just find pictures and bring them to school with you during the first week.

I am looking forward to working with you and your parents this year.  If you have any questions, you can email me at blycosky@pvsd.org.  I hope you have a fun few weeks before school starts.  Rest up, relax, and be ready to start your best year of school with a positive attitude.  See you soon!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lycosky
