I'd like to welcome you to Fifth Grade!   You may have found out if you are in my classroom when your parents checked Home Access Center.  If you are in my class, welcome!  We're about to embark on a journey that you will never forget!

Here is my letter to you!  I will also include it in an email to your parents very soon.

Hello Future Fifth Grader,

I hope you have been enjoying your summer thus far. I wanted to write to you to welcome you to a wonderful time in your life. You will soon find out that fifth grade will be an exciting year filled with many interesting and enjoyable activities. I think you will find that our time spent together this year will serve as a wonderful conclusion to your elementary school years.

I know you may be nervous and curious as to what you will need for fifth grade. Although the school will provide many materials for your use, you will need to supply several items. I have attached a list of those materials. Please try to have the necessary materials on the first day of school. If that’s not possible, I will understand. I will notify you in advance if any additional materials are needed.

Homework!!! Can you believe I am giving you an assignment already? I would like you to make a creative document that represents you. You can create a sign, a poster, or you can simply write me a letter. You can write it, illustrate it, or make it on the computer. I want to get to know you so I‘d like you to share information about yourself in that assignment. Tell me about your family, favorites, hobbies, interests, etc. If you want to include pictures, feel free. Don’t worry, it’s not graded. I just want to learn as much about you as I can.

Enjoy the last few weeks of vacation. Don’t worry about fifth grade! I will calm your fears on the first day of school. I look forward to seeing you on August 26th!

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at school (484-961-7064) or email me at I am anxious to meet you and to begin, what I feel, will be a rewarding year for both of us.

Mr. Basile

P.S.S. - Can you answer these trivia questions? (Don’t think too hard. It’s just for fun!)

  1. How much dirt is in a 3-inch by 4-inch by 6-inch hole?

  1. How many times can you subtract the number 2 from 50?

  1. What five-letter word becomes shorter when you add two letters to it?

  1. In our calendar, some months have 30 days and some have 31 days. How many months have 28 days?

  1. I have two coins that total 35 cents. Since one of them is not a dime, what are the two coins?

  1. I have 10 stamps. They are 3¢ and 5¢ stamps. They are worth 40¢. How many of each do I have?

**These can be pretty tricky. Maybe you can ask your parents for some hints. I’ll give you the answers on the first day of school!**
