The 2017-18 school year represents my eighth year teaching Emotional Support at PVMS East, and my eighteenth year working in the field of special education. 
The journey through middle school is, among many things, a pathway in which students are given the tools designed to foster their emerging independence.  This 'emerging independence' is heavily reliant upon self-confidence, organization, and the ability to communicate effectively.  The natural progression of an individuals independent functioning may be affected by deficiencies in any of these three areas.  Therefore, the emotional support program at East utilizes a therapeutic approach designed to maximize opportunities to practice independent functioning, create an environment that encourages self-expression, and to learn the value of helping others while taking responsibility for one's self.
