Hello and Welcome to ELD (English Language Development)! I am Mrs. Rak and I will  be teaching ELD to the students in grades K-5 at South Elementary and Schwenksville Elementary. I have been teaching Spanish and ESL (intermittently) at PV since 2001.

I’m excited about the opportunity to have you in my class and to get to know you and your families and to establish a strong partnership with common goals and missions.

I am looking forward to a productive, fun, and successful year!

Our Mission

The mission of the Perkiomen Valley School District is to provide a rich academic and cultural learning environment that maximizes available resources to assure that all students grow intellectually, socially, and emotionally, attaining the skills necessary to become successful citizens.

ELD K-5
English as a second language instruction is an essential component of the student experience in Perkiomen Valley. The appreciation and study of languages and cultures provides important preparation for living, leading, and achieving in a global community.

All students in grades K-5 who qualify for ELD services, receive instruction  to develop communicative competences, focusing on authentic interaction, reading and writing integrating cultural content and context.

The ELD program strives to help students:

  • Communicate in the target language through speaking, writing, listening, reading
  • Gain knowledge, respect, and understanding of other people and cultures
  • Connect with other subjects to acquire a deeper insight into the English language and culture
  • Be an active participant in culturally and linguistically-diverse communities and global societies

What is ELD?

English Language Development (ELD) is a systematic instructional model designed to develop the English language proficiency of English learners.  ELD instruction emphasizes the development of all four language domains: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Perkiomen Valley School District ELD Program

Purpose:

The purpose of the program is to increase the English language proficiency of all limited English proficient students so they can meet state and district academic standards and enable them to participate fully and meaningfully in all programs and extracurricular activities offered in the district.

Guidelines for the ELD Program:

The ELD program is designed to provide planned instruction to meet each student’s individual needs based on the English language proficiency level as identified through multiple criteria in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Adequate content area support is provided while the student is learning English with a focus on both English Language Proficiency Standards and Academic Standards to ensure student achievement in both language and content.  ELD curriculum will be aligned to Pennsylvania’s English language arts standards and the PA English language proficiency standards.  Content area instruction will incorporate the PA English language proficiency standards as an overlay to Pennsylvania academic standards.
