Core Curriculm
All students at South Elementary School receive literacy instruction aligned to the common core standards of the state of Pennsylvania.  The following resources are are used with all students:

Kindergarten:  Making Meaning and Being a Writer, Developmental Studies Center
Grades 1-5:  Reading Wonders, McGraw Hill Publishers
Grades K, 1, and 2:  Fundations, Wilson Language

Small Group Reading
In addition to whole group core curriculum instruction, South's teachers place a high value on meeting with students in small reading groups.  This allows for differentiation as we strive to meet the needs of all students.

Reading Intervention
Through periodic assessment and teacher input, we seek to identify students who are struggling to achieve proficiency.  In small groups and in 1:1 settings we provide supplementary instruction designed to target specific deficiencies.  Below are areas of focus for intervention groups.
  •  Phonics Instruction
  •  Comprehension Groups
  •  Fluency Practice

The Home-School Connection
Your involvement is crucial to your child's literacy success.  Provide a calm and quiet spot in your home where your child can enjoy reading.  Plan a time each day for reading, whether or not it is assigned.  Furthermore, no child is ever too old to be read to.  By choosing books above your child's reading level, you will increase his/her vocabulary while strengthening comprehension.

The mission of the Perkiomen Valley School District is to provide a rich academic and cultural learning environment that maximizes available resources to assure that all students grow intellectually, socially, and emotionally, attaining the skills necessary to become successful citizens.
