Bereavement absence allowances per the most current collective bargaining agreement and contracts for each employee group:

PVEA (teachers and professional staff)

a. Bereavement leave for all employees shall be governed by the language covering such leave as outlined in the Pennsylvania School Code as amended except to allow up to five (5) days leave for immediate family members. In accordance with Section l 154(b) of the Public School Code of 1949, whenever a professional or temporary professional employee shall be absent from duty because of a death in the immediate family of said Bargaining Unit Employee, there shall be no deduction in salary in said Bargaining Unit Employee for an absence not in excess of
five (5) school days.

b. In the event said Bargaining Unit Employee receives notification of a death in the immediate family of said Bargaining Unit Employee during said Bargaining Unit Employee’s seven and one-half(7-1/2) hour work day, then in that event the District shall not treat such a day to be eligible for consideration as one (1) of the five (5) school days eligible for bereavement day entitlement.

c. Members of the immediate family shall be defined as father, step-father, mother, step-mother, brother, step-brother, sister, step sister, son, step-son, son-in law, daughter, step- daughter, daughter-in-law, husband, wife, grandchild, parent-in-law, or near relative who resides in the same household, or any person with whom the employee has made his or her home.

d. In the event of the death of a near relative, including employee’s first cousin, grandparent, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, brother-in-law, or sister-in-law, an employee will be allowed one (1) regularly scheduled day off with pay at his/her regular daily rate.

e. The Superintendent may grant additional days in his/her sole discretion.


PVESPA (full-time secretaries and paraprofessionals)

a. Bereavement leave for all employees shall be governed by the language covering such leave as outlined in the Pennsylvania School Code as amended except to allow up to five (5) days leave for immediate family members.

b. Members of the immediate family shall be defined as father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband, wife, parent-in-law, or near relative who resides in the same household, or any person with whom the employee has made his or her home.

c. In the event of the death of a near relative, including employee’s first cousin, grandparent, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, brother-in-law or sister-in-law, an employee will be allowed one (1) regularly scheduled day off with pay at his/her regular daily rate.


Maintenance, Custodial, and Food Service Employees

1. In the event of the death of a member of an employee’s immediate family, including father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, spouse, parent-in-law or near relative who resides in the employee’s household, or any person with whom the employee has made his home, an employee will be allowed up to five (5) regularly scheduled days off with pay at his/her straight time rate.

2. In the event of the death of a near relative, including employee’s first cousin, grandparent, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, brother-in-law or sister-in-law, an employee will be allowed up to three (3) regularly scheduled days off with pay at his/her straight time rate.


Confidential Secretaries/Supervisors/RNs and Administrators

a. Bereavement leave for all employees shall be governed by the language covering such leave as outlined in the Pennsylvania School Code as amended except to allow up to five (5) days leave for immediate family members.

b. Members of the immediate family shall be defined as father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband, wife, parent-in-law, or near relative who resides in the same household, or any person with whom the employee has made his or her home.

c. In the event of the death of a near relative, including employee’s first cousin, grandparent, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, brother-in-law or sister-in-law, an employee will be allowed one (1) regularly scheduled day off with pay at his/her regular daily rate.
