The Perkiomen Valley School District recognizes the challenges that winter weather emergencies—such as snow, ice, or flooding—along with other unforeseen events, can present. These conditions can disrupt school schedules, leading to delayed openings, early dismissals, or cancellations.
While our primary goal is to maintain in-person/onsite education, the safety of our students and staff remains our top priority. When in-person/onsite instruction is not possible, the District may implement one of two options:
*Schools will only consider closing after the District has used all built in inclement weather days (3) and FIDS (5). More information regarding make-up days will be shared as needed.
We are committed to the well-being of our community and understand the broader impact these decisions may have. Our administration carefully considers each situation to prioritize both safety and learning continuity.
An inclement weather day (traditionally referred to as a “snow day”) is a designated day when schools are closed due to extreme weather conditions, such as heavy snow, flooding, ice, or severe storms, that make it unsafe for students and staff to travel. To minimize disruptions to the academic calendar, the District includes three of these days in advance as “built-in” inclement weather days.
If the three built-in inclement weather days are not fully used by the end of the school year, they will be removed from the calendar, and the last day of school will be adjusted accordingly.
A Virtual Instructional Day is a broad category that encompasses both synchronous and asynchronous learning. The District can also announce a Flexible Instructional Day (FID) as a type of Virtual Instructional Day.
While schools are able to host school onsite or virtually to meet State requirements for the number of days and hours attended, virtual days are approved by the Board of School Directors. Currently, the district has scheduled virtual learning days for high school students on the dates of PSAT and Keystone Exam administration.
The School Board has also approved a Flexible Instructional Days (FIDs) plan. This affords the Superintendent to call up to five (5) virtual learning days due to inclement weather or school emergencies that preclude onsite instruction.

The decision to host school onsite or virtually in the Perkiomen Valley School District due to inclement weather is based on a careful analysis of all relevant information. The Superintendent is responsible for the final decision, and her assessment is based on recommendations from the Director of Operations and Transportation as well as local weather reports. Careful consideration is given to all roadways, districtwide. The Perkiomen Valley School District encompasses a total of 26 square miles in six (6) different municipalities. On inclement weather days, the streets in one neighborhood may be clear of snow and ice, while the roads in another part of the district may be quite dangerous.
We strive to determine a course of action by 5:30am so the district can notify staff, students, families, and the community.

Information on school closings, delayed openings, early dismissals and/or virtual learning due to inclement weather and other emergencies will be announced via the following sources:
Children who normally ride the bus will take the bus home on early dismissal days. In general, you can expect your child’s bus to arrive home by estimating the amount of time it usually takes for the bus to arrive home after dismissal, and applying it to the new dismissal time.

Preparation for the day will occur between 8:00 and 10:00 am.
At 10:00 am, students will join virtual morning meetings (K-8) or check Google Classroom (9-12) to learn about the day’s activities.

No, students are not required to attend virtual office hours, but teachers and paraprofessionals will be available for questions or assistance.
Provided below are some FAQs and their answers to help you understand how we work with our bus contractor, STA, to get students home or to school safely on inclement weather days.
When the Perkiomen Valley School District (PVSD) is closed due to inclement weather, no transportation will be provided to any public, non-public, special education or other non-PVSD school students in or out of the district.
If the Perkiomen Valley School District has a delayed opening or early dismissal due to bad road conditions and/or inclement weather within the district, transportation to any public, non-public or special education school, both in or out of this district, will be adjusted by the same amount of time.
Transportation for students attending non-PVSD schools shall be coordinated with the early dismissal times of the school district in which the non-PVSD school is located.
No transportation will be provided to any public, non-public or special education school where the local public school district is closed due to bad road conditions and/or inclement weather in the district, even though PVSD may be open.
We will honor the dismissal times at the non-PVSD school and provide transportation.
PVSD will not transport students to any non-PVSD school until it has confirmation that the school is open and prepared to receive students.
PVSD transportation will follow their regular schedule and transport your child to his/her non-PVSD school.
The district does not provide transportation for students to non-PVSD schools when the district is closed due to poor road conditions or inclement weather.
FYI: The Board authorizes the use of video and audio recording on school buses and school vehicles in accordance with Perkiomen Valley School District Policy 810.2.
